UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres Calls Violence Against Women A “Big Cancer” And An Emergency That Needs Attention

I am convinced by now that leaders across the world have acknowledged that there is a drastic rise in crimes against women. The alarming data on this issue and statements on it by the leaders go in hand in hand, but what we lack here is action, clearly. Every other day, we come across at least one horrifying crime committed against women, and it continues.  Recently, talking about this with the students of IIT Bombay, UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres called violence against women, a “big cancer” and stated that it is a matter that calls for immediate action by the people responsible for tackling it. Well, there he is absolutely right.

The United Nation’s General Secretary, Antonio Guterres in his speech at IIT Bombay put his opinion on many issues related to women and their rights. The most highlighted one was the crimes against gender, which Antonio acknowledged to be one that is just getting worse with time and no better. Talking about gender equality, Antonio opined that there is still a lot to be done on that front. However, he did point out that women today, are shouldering big responsibilities by holding important positions in politics and defence, as per the news.

Another point that the UN General Secretary also condemned is the fact that online attacks against women activists and politicians are on a rise. And this is a valid point that the official raised, which somewhere we kind of ignore and do not pay much heed to. But the violence of any kind should not be tolerated and social media falls under this.

The UN General secretary undoubtedly raised some very raging issues in his speech, but now what we exactly need is action. Some strong actions by the leaders of the world because the crime news against women has become unbearable.
