Three Men Torture And Burn Private Parts Of Two Women For Being Lesbians. Section 377 Is Scrapped But The Hate Remains

How sick and inhuman men can be? News of crimes against seems to be never-ending but the degree to which it is committed is even more unbearable. A recent case that has emerged from West Bengal is proof of the kind of treatment women receive for simply being in love! The incident happened in a small village in Murshidabad district where two young girls were thrashed by men because they suspected them to be lesbians. The culprits tortured the girls brutally and even tried to rape them.

Going by the reports on this case, the two girls were good friends since their childhood. They use to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company. However, one night when one of the victims decided to stay over at her friend’s place because she was experiencing some discomfort,  three men attacked them and committed this brutal crime. One of the accused is reportedly the victim’s relative. Allegedly, the three culprits beat the women, and also with an iron rod burnt their private parts. As per the victims’ ordeal in the statement for the FIR, she also alleged that the men tried to rape them and threatened them if they told anyone about it.

After this horrifying incident, the girls even started to question their bonding and said that if they ever had been stopped in the past, they would not have gone forward with their relationship. Meanwhile, only one of the culprits has been arrested by the police, and the other two are absconding, as per news.

This news makes me furious. Who are these men to decide a girl’s wish on who they should romantically engage with? Also, after the Supreme court abolished Section 377 in India and legalised homosexuality, why does the hate crime against it still exist? I guess, the fact that there is a lack of awareness, and that the regressive ideas are still prevalent in the rural sections of society, even the abolishment of this section did not do any good. Unless we as a society try and change the ideologies, such shameful incidents will keep happening, and therefore it becomes very important for the authorities to try and initiate this change even if it is on a small scale initially.
