This Man Uploaded His Wife’s Friend’s Pictures And Contact Information On The Internet Over A Money Matter

I don’t mean to be cynical but at one point or another, we’ve all had to bear the brunt of being a woman. The truth is, no matter how much we try and empower ourselves until the patriarchal world doesn’t accept us as equals we will always be vulnerable. Every day we hear stories of women being murdered, raped and tortured. Today though, we are talking about a woman who was attacked on social media. You see, this man uploaded her photos and her contact information on the internet. Needless to say, because of this, she was hounded by numerous lecherous men.

The Coimbatore Police have arrested a 24-year-old man, V Venkateshwaran, for sharing his wife’s friend’s pictures and contact information on social media. The victim, Sangeeta (reports have changed her name), and the accused’s wife Saranya, were friends and stayed in the same neighbourhood in Coimbatore.

A while ago, Sharanya had borrowed Rs 10,000 from Sangeeta. Recently, she had begun asking for her money back as she needed it for her husband’s treatment. On Sunday, Sharanya returned Rs 8,600 to Sangeeta but the two of them got into a heated argument over the rest of the amount. Sharanya’s husband stepped in and pushed Sangeeta. He threatened her with dire consequences. And what he did was upload her pictures and make her information public.

From the next day onwards, Sangeeta started receiving calls from strangers. They told her that they had seen her pictures and found her number on a website. She was suspicious that Venkateshwaran was behind this and so she filed a complaint with the police. Based on this complaint, the police arrested Venkateshwaran under various sections of the IPC. Charges under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and the Information Technology Act have also been invoked against him.

Cyberbullying has gotten so rampant. Sangeeta will now have to go through another traumatic ordeal just trying to get her pictures and contact information taken down from the website. Social media platforms need to establish an easier way to safeguard the privacy of women but we are glad that such swift action was taken against the accused.
