This NRI Woman From Australia Has Been Fighting To Delete Her Leaked Nude Photos From Social Media Platforms

In today’s day and age, it’s nearly impossible to escape social media. We suddenly live in the virtual world and though it has its perks, the downsides are terrifying. For instance, the anonymity that it provides might be extremely useful when you want to stalk your ex’s current partner but at the same time, that very anonymity leaves you vulnerable to cyber-bullying. Suddenly, that has become a huge problem. You know, in the last few years I have developed an irrational fear that somehow my private, intimate pictures are going to end up online for the world to see and judge. It’s the millennial version of making a girl’s MMS and it happens to numerous women. Most commonly the ones that dare to end a relationship leaving an egotistical man butthurt. It’s some form of twisted revenge strategy and once those pictures are up, getting them down is a herculean task. Just ask this Hyderabadi NRI woman who has been running helter-skelter trying to get her nude pictures removed from various social media platforms. It’s proving to be a more difficult task than climbing Mt. Everest.

According to reports, a 30-year-old NRI woman from Australia is fighting to get her nude photos taken down from various social media platforms. This matter came to light after her mother approached the Telangana HC asking it to intervene in the matter. In her plea before Justice K Lakshman, she asked the court to free her daughter from this nightmarish ordeal. Meanwhile, the victim has been writing to Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms to take down her nude photographs and fake accounts but there has been no avail yet.

In her petition, her mother explained that in 2011, the victim was in a short-term relationship with one of her classmates. The man was becoming increasingly abusive towards her. He pressured the woman into sending him nude photos of herself by threatening to commit suicide if she doesn’t follow through. When the woman ended the relationship, these photos surfaced online. Although they were taken down in 2012, they resurfaced in 2019. However, when the woman confronted the accused, he obviously denied uploading the nude photos.

Following her mother’s plea, the court sought to know from the station house officer of Cyberabad cyber crime police what steps were being taken to catch the culprit. The police have been given time until March 30 to respond. The judge also permitted the woman to approach the Union ministry of communications with a representative. They are to take action as per the law. Notices have also been sent to Google, Twitter and Facebook asking them to file documents explaining the protection in place to protect people’s privacy in such matters.

Why is it so difficult for a woman to have such intimate photographs of herself taken down? Especially since cyber-bullying has become so rampant. Social media platforms need to establish an easier way to safeguard the privacy of women and take severe action in such cases. We are a long way from curing the male ego, this is the least social media platforms can do.
