Tennis Player Leander Paes Guilty Of Domestic Abuse Against Rhea Pillai, Court Says Live-In Doesn’t Deprive Women Of Rights

Remember when live-in relationships were considered a shocker? Live-in relationships are a reality of our society now. Our parents may not accept it, but even the court of law has now begun acknowledging the rights of live-in partners, in the event that they become subjects of domestic abuse or have other issues like property claims and so on. Recently a court presided over the case of a domestic violence complaint filed against tennis ace Leander Paes by his live-in partner Rhea Pillai and declared that just because a woman is in a live-in relationship, doesn’t mean she does not have rights. Paes has been found guilty of abuse and has been directed to pay relief to Pillai.

According to Live Law, a Metropolitan Magistrate Court declared that the former tennis player Leander Paes caused economic and mental violence against former partner Rhea Pillai under the Domestic Violence Act. The court also ordered him to pay the monthly rent of Rs 50,000 if she decides to leave their shared house and Rs 1 lakh as monthly maintenance. He already pays their daughter’s expenses as well. The order was passed by metropolitan magistrate Komalsing Rajput earlier this month but it was announced to the public on Wednesday, as per reports. The order mentioned that Paes caused many acts of domestic violence against Pillai, “The consensual sexual relationship between married individual out of their relationship of marriage is not prohibited, except few exceptions…Merely because socially such a practice is unacceptable the Applicant can not be deprived of her rights,” the court stated. The case was filed against the tennis player and his father in the year 2014.
