Survey Shows More Than 30% Women In India Believe A Husband Beating His Wife Is Justified. Wait What?

You know when I hear about cases of crimes against women, I often wonder whether the accusers actually believe that they are not guilty and did not do anything wrong or are they just scared of the punishment. Take, for instance, the cases of domestic violence, where an abusive husband beats up his wife. Does he think he is justified for doing it? I mean, I’ve heard people justifying that they beat their wife to remove frustration, and because it is their wife they can do anything, and etc. But is it a valid justification? I think not. But then again it is just my opinion not everyone else’s. In fact, recently a survey from around 18 states and Jammu and Kashmir were asked whether in their opinion a husband is justified in beating his wife and the responses are revealing, to say the least.

The National Family Health Survey in a recent study showed that the falling fertility rate and growing back accounts were all pointing towards women empowerment but when it came to domestic violence there was still a lot of work to be done. The data from the survey was revealed on Wednesday.

The survey had posed a question to people from 18 states and Jammu and Kashmir, “In your opinion, is a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife…” And below the question, they had given seven situations as a reason to beat the wife. Some of the reasons were: If she went out without letting him know if she neglected house or children, is she argued with the husband, if she refused to have sexual intercourse with him, if he thought that she was being unfaithful to him, if she disrespected her in-laws, etc.

The responses that the survey got when they asked whether a husband was justified in beating his wife, was telling. 83.8% of women in Telangana believed that the husband was justified and it was in Himachal Pradesh where there were the lowest number of women – 14.8% – who thought that the action was justified. Among the men that were surveyed, Karnataka men had the highest respondents supporting violent behaviour – 81.9% and the lowest was yet again in Himachal Pradesh – 14.2%.

As per The Indian Express, the survey showed the most common reasons why a husband is justified in beating his wife are if they (wives) showed disrespect towards in-laws, neglected the house, and neglected children.

Honestly, I’m shocked but not surprised. I mean, women in India are brought up in a way where they are taught to justify every action of their husbands. We live in a society where if a wife is getting beaten by her husband, we automatically assume that it must be the woman’s fault. And that same mentality has been reflected in the survey. So, shocked but not even a bit surprised.
