Study Reveals Women With Long Covid Show More Symptoms Than Men

After almost 2 years, we can still see cases of Covid-19 occurring – it is safe to say that we’ve not been successful in completely eradicating the disease. In fact, there are still universities and medical foundations that are constantly studying Covid to understand it better and help those infected in a better way. One such recent study was conducted by the University of Parma, Italy, which revealed that women who have long Covid tend to show more symptoms than compared to men.

A study conducted by the University of Parma, Italy and published in the Journal of Women’s Health found that women with long Covid – a set of symptoms that persist for months even after the initial phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection, show more symptoms than men with the same syndrome.

As per reports, the research conducted at long-term follow-up showed that women with long Covid were more likely to experience hardship in swallowing, fatigue, chest pain, and palpations compared to men. The study was conducted by examining 223 patients (89 women and 134 men) who were infected by SARS-CoV-2.

The University of Parma and the University-Hospital of Parma researchers found that 91% of the patients who they followed up for 5 months (on average) continued to experience symptoms of Covid. And two of the most common symptoms of which women were more symptomatic than men were breathlessness and fatigue.

The study showed that more women than men reported weakness, thoracic pain, palpitations, sleep disturbance, and dyspnea. The study further said, “Long-term longitudinal studies are needed to fully understand the sex-related pathophysiology of the symptoms and the effects of pharmacological treatment related to Long COVID-19. These studies will be crucial to understanding the natural trajectory of Long COVID-19 in order to implement targeted treatment strategies and to prevent bias in treating males and females, they added.” They added that there are few studies that have assessed sex differences in the long Covid syndrome.
