Studies Show Decrease In Clinical Abortions But Increase In Online Purchase Of Abortion Pills After Overturning Of Roe V Wade Judgement

One of the most questionable and condemned decisions taken by the US court was the overturning of the Roe V Wade judgement. On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court upheld the decision of making abortions illegal in the states. Since then many things have changed for US women. There rate of abortions in clinics has seen a considerable amount of fall, but on the other, the rate at which online pills have been ordered has seen a rise. These two significant results were found in a study carried out by We Count and JAMA separately. This can suggest that women have found other ways of abortion since their court of justice stripped them of this human right.

The results of the study by We Count were published on October 28 and it dealt with the case of in-clinic abortions and the difference in number from April to August. As per which it has been noted that overall abortion cases have significantly gone down, especially in states that have made abortions illegal. But the study also pointed out that the states which have not banned abortion cases have gone up by 11%, which means that women are travelling to these states for legal abortions.

On the other hand, the results posted by JAMA showed that there was a surge in the online purchase of abortion pills. And this purchase was made by women through an organisation called Aid Access which according to reports, sells abortion pills through the mail from outside the US. This rise was noted soon after the US Supreme Court overruled the Roe V Wade judgement in June. As per the results, there was a 120% rise in purchasing abortion pills.

Abortion is something that should totally be a woman’s decision. It is her body to decide whether or not she wants to keep a baby, and women get pregnant under different circumstances. Taking away this basic right and choice is simply going against human rights. There have to be other ways that women deal with this injustice and against them, which has come through very evidently in the results of these studies. It is however not clear whether women are consuming the pills or not for abortions but still the rise in purchase show that they are left with no other alternative. This in turn could affect a woman’s health too. So overturning of Roe V Wade judgement in not really stopping abortions, but will definitely create other problems for women and women only.
