Sick! Groom Violently Pulled Bride’s Hair, Shoved A Ladoo In Her Mouth

What is it about Indian weddings that these can barely ever go uneventful? Weddings are really complicated, and many times, also beautiful. Indian weddings can be liberating or a window to the oppressive culture we are a part of, depending on where we are coming from. Today, I wrote about a bride whose husband encouraged her to perform martial arts at the wedding, so she can inspire young girls to learn self-defence. Clearly, she comes from a background that isn’t sold on patriarchy. And then we have a viral video of a groom shoving a ladoo in his bride’s mouth. Worse is that the Instagram user who shared it meant to be funny. Obviously, the netizens aren’t amused.

So this is what happened. A female relative is holding a thali with sweets and other items. As the ritual goes, both the groom and the bride must feed each other sweets. So the bride picks a ladoo, and feeds him, while trying to avoid any sort of eye contact. She has her head hung low, maybe as a sign of respect and coyness, I don’t know.

It is then the groom’s turn to feed the ladoo to the bride. When he picks one, the bride turns her head, hesitating to eat it – for whatever reason. At that point, the groom pulls her by her hair and shoves the ladoo in her mouth, with a sense of penis pride and victory on his face as he watches her defeat.

I feel worried for women like her. If this man can get aggressive, pull her hair and shove a ladoo in her mouth, what do you think he will do when he is overcome by carnal desires? Do you think he will care about her consent or will she just have to oblige whenever he wants to have sex? That’s marital rape.

Will they care about when she wants to make babies? Will she ever have the option to say no or will she just accept a life of no rights and abuse by the hands of her husband? I mean, really, if someone can do that for a simple ladoo, they can do far worse in other situations. The concept of consent is either understood or not. There is no selectivity here. And clearly, the power-play is established here and nobody around thought there was anything wrong with it.

A woman wrote, “This is not funny this is abuse. That is a sign of what is to come. I can’t believe this family allowed this to happen. These are not funny or entertaining these are sad. That’s a violent man who didn’t like no!” Really, Instagram user who found it funny, this is really not.
