Serena Williams Says She’s Evolving From Tennis As She Announces Retirement
It is extremely tough to watch a star sportsperson walk away from their sport to retire, more so when they’re legendary. For all you tennis fans, we come bearing bad news. American tennis player Serena Williams has decided to bid adieu to tennis. The star tennis player announced that she is retiring from the game. While she did not provide a specific date or details, her plan to walk away from tennis seems to be set in stone.

In an article in Vogue magazine, Serena Williams revealed that she has never liked the word “retirement” as it does not feel like a modern word to her. Calling her retirement an evolution, the tennis player said that she is evolving away from tennis and towards other things that are important to her. She went on to reveal that a few years ago she started a venture capital firm called Serena Ventures and soon after she started a family that she now wishes to grow.

Discussing her retirement, Serena Williams said that she has been “reluctant” to admit to herself or to anyone else that she has to bid adieu to tennis while revealing that she has hardly discussed it with her husband, Alexis, as it’s like a taboo topic. Revealing that she hasn’t even been able to talk about it with her parents as well, the American tennis player said that whenever there’s a conversation about her retirement she gets an “uncomfortable lump” in her throat and she begins crying. Serena shared that she has only ever discussed it with her therapist. The tennis player further added that while retirement may be a joyous occasion for many people, she finds no happiness in it.

Expressing her sadness, Serena Williams revealed that she feels a “great deal of pain” and it is the “hardest thing” she has ever imagined. The tennis player said that she hates it and while she does not want it to be over, she is ready to begin a new chapter of her life. Stating that she has no idea how she’s going to look at the article once it’s out and knows that it is the end of her story, the story of a Black girl who wanted to play tennis, the story that began in Compton, California. The tennis player went on recalling some moments from her old games that were exhilarating and spoke about how she used to channel her anger and negative emotions to win a game.
