If you’ve grown up watching the same Bollywood movies as I have, you are no stranger to wedding drama and dysfunctional marriages either. In fact, even in real life, no Indian wedding is complete without some amount of theatrics and melodrama. Don’t you agree? It’s for this reason that writing about Indian weddings is always so much fun. However, the bizarre tale we have for you today is equal parts traumatic and bizarre. You see, at a wedding in UP, after the bride collapsed and died on stage during the ceremonies the groom was married off to her younger sister. In what world is this okay?
We’ve all watched Hum Aapke Hain Koun and hence know that it’s not unheard of for a man to marry his wife’s sister after her demise. But what happened at this wedding in UP’s Etawah district is definitely out of the ordinary. It all started when the couple, after exchanging garlands, were planning their pheras. Just then, the bride, Surbhi, collapsed next to the groom, Manjesh Kumar. A doctor was called but it was too late. Surbhi had suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Usually, if such a traumatic incident occurs it’s pretty obvious that the wedding will be called off, right? Nope. Not this time. You see, after Surbhi’s untimely demise both families got together and quickly decided to marry Manjesh off to Nisha, Surbhi’s younger sister. How was this even allowed? I don’t think you can just substitute a bride.
Saurabh, Surbhi’s brother told the media, “We did not know what to do in the situation. Both the families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married to the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed. Surabhi’s body was kept in another room and the marriage of Manjesh was solemnized with Nisha. After the wedding, when the ‘baraat’ left, Surabhi’s last rites were held.”
How can you leave the bride’s corpse in another room and get her sister married to the groom? I am all for weirdly dysfunctional families but this is just twisted. This entire incident is a series of bizarre and unfortunate events that hopefully, no one will ever be inspired by.
