“It Is Nauseating”: Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao Asks PM Modi To Overturn Bilkis Bano Rapists’s Release

On this Independence day, many of us were left shook when 11 rapists were released to continue their lives in society as civilians. This is in regards to the Bilkis Bano rape case from 2002 amidst the Gujarat riots. While there has been a lot of outrage over this horrifying decision on Twitter, K T Rama Rao has appealed to PM Narendra Modi to intervene for the same.

On Wednesday, Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help in overturning Gujarat’s decision to pardon 11 convicts in the case of the gang rape and murder of Bilkis Bano’s relatives during the 2002 riots. KT Rama Rao appealed in a tweet to Narendra Modi to intervene in the release of the rapists. He requested that the Prime Minister intervene and reverse the Gujarat Government’s decision to release 11 rapists since it is revolting and goes against The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order. He further added that if the Prime Minister really meant what he said about respecting women, they should be shrewd in front of the nation.

According to the Gujarati remission policy in effect at the time of the 11 life sentence prisoners’ conviction in the case in 2008, all 11 of the individuals were freed. Pictures of relatives meeting them outside the Godhra jail with sweets, touching their feet for blessings, immediately started to circulate. The prisoner whose guilty plea led to his release, Radheshyam Shah, said he was happy to be free because he would be able to see his family and start a new life.

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) need to be appropriately amended, according to the Minister for Industries and IT, so that no rapist may obtain bail through the legal system. They further added that strong laws are the only way to guarantee that the judicial system can operate effectively and quickly.
