Report Says Girls Are Sold, Women Are Raped To Settle Disputes In Rajasthan. The Details Are Sending Chills Down Our Spines!
Just when I think that things can’t get any worse than this, I read an article that sends chills down my spine. The cases of crimes committed against women are becoming more brutal and inhuman by the day and the steps taken to curb them aren’t enough. Just take the instance of this report that shed light on how girls were sold and women were raped in Rajasthan to settle disputes. And the worst part is that the selling of girls is followed by formal agreements on stamp papers. This is so unsettling and disgusting to even imagine such a thing happening.
A leading daily report on Wednesday revealed that girls as young as eight are being sold in places like Bhilwara in Rajasthan following formal agreements on stamped papers. Not only that but multiple women are also raped on diktats of village caste councils. And both of these practices are done to settle disputes.

The report said that instead of going to the police to settle disputes, they often sell girls or order their mothers to be raped. It revealed that a caste council had forced a man to sell his sister first and then his 12-year-old daughter to settle his Rs. 1.5 lakh debt that he had taken.
In another instance, a young girl’s father was forced to sell her for Rs. 6 lakh, and their house because he had to repay Rs. 6 lakh that he had taken for the treatment of his wife who later died. The girl was then taken to Agra where she was sold thrice and even became pregnant four times.
As soon as this report came out, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sent a notice to the state government. The NHRC who also did a search on their end found that girls were auctioned to recover money in cases of disputes over loans. Their report found that girls were trafficked abroad and were physically abused, tortured, sexually assaulted, and kept as slaves.

The NHRC has also asked Rajasthan’s chief secretary to file a detailed action taken report within four weeks. They have already taken and proposed multiple measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
I really don’t know what to say about this. I mean, the agency of a girl, a woman is completely lost here. They are no more objectified but rather treated as objects that belong to someone – whether that someone is her father, brother, etc. or that someone is the person bidding and abusing her. To say that these people disgust me would be a massive understatement.
