While teaching and education are industries which generally considered to be women-centric, it is pretty common to see men holding positions of power in those industries. However, that is taking a slow but gradual turn which can be seen with the appointment of Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as the first female Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has been appointed as JNU’s first woman Vice-Chancellor. She currently is the Vice-Chancellor for Savitribai Phule University in Maharashtra. She will be succeeding Professor M Jagdesh Kumar who said, “It gives me pleasure to inform that Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit from the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University, has been appointed as the next vice-chancellor of JNU. Early Life 

Professor Pandit was born on July 15, 1962, in St Petersberg, Russia (USSR). She has been in the teaching industry since 1988 and has worked in the research field since 1985. She began her teaching career in 1988 at Goa University and later moved to Pune University in 1993. She herself is an alumna of JNU. 

Education

Professor Pandit has a diploma in Social Work from California State University. She also has an MA in Political Science from Presidency College in Madras. She pursued her MPhil and PhD in International Relations from JNU. Parliament and Foreign Policy in India – The Nehru Years was her topic of thesis for her PhD.

Career

In her expansive career that has lasted over 3 decades, Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has achieved a lot. She is a member of many esteemed organisations, such as the Indian Secular Society, the Indian Association of American Studies, the All India Political Science Association, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, the American Studies Research Institute (Hyderabad) etc.

She has also been a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). She has guided 29 PhD students in her career. Professor Pandit has also authored books such as Parliament and Foreign Policy in India (1990) and Restructuring Environmental governance in Asia-Ethics and Policy (2003), according to sources

As someone who wants to do a PhD someday in the future, Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit is definitely an inspiration, to say the least. I am completely in awe of how brilliant she is and her insights. It is high time a University as prestigious as JNU have their first female VC and Professor Pandit completely fits the role!
