Nykaa Founder Falguni Nayar Says Sometimes Women Put Unnecessary Constraints In Their Minds. She’s Right!

I believe it is evident that building a career of any sort in today’s competition is a mammoth task. Being an entrepreneur is even harder. While the idea of being your own boss might seem appealing, it comes with a lot of responsibilities and risks. Additionally, building an empire as a woman is a different ballgame. Considering that business and finance have always been considered male-dominated fields, making a breakthrough in them as an individual female can be challenging. However, there are some that are able to achieve this feat. The founder of Nykaa, Falguni Nayar is one of these amazing women as she is India’s richest self-made female billionaire after her company’s IPO opened.

In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol, Falguni Nayar opened up about the meaning of wealth, her passion for her work and everything she has learned. Having worked for Uday Kotak before she started Nykaa, Falguni Nayar was asked if she has gotten any advice from him for running a publicly-listed company. Falguni said that she has not actively asked him for advice but having worked with him for many years, she has learned a lot. Two of the things she mentioned was the importance of corporate governance and not doing anything that is not financially sustainable.

When asked if starting a business at 50 worked for or against her, Falguni Nayar said that that being a working professional for many years taught her a lot and helped her navigate her business. Her main motivation was that she had always been interested in entrepreneurship and was not satisfied and wanted more, that’s what brought about the birth of Nykaa. She also says that she doesn’t believe that there is one ‘playbook.’ Falguni Nayar said, “I feel women put constraints in their minds which are not so necessary. Today, many women are managing their businesses cum young children.” How inspiring!

Lastly, when asked what advice would she want to give to aspiring entrepreneurs, Falguni Nayar reminded us that entrepreneurship and business requires a lot of hard work, passion, conviction and time. She advises entrepreneurs to choose something they love so that they willingly put in the effort, commitment and passion required towards their business.

As a young woman, seeing someone as dynamic as Falguni Nayar is very motivating to me. Reading her interview made me feel that I could do anything I put my mind to and am passionate about. I am glad we have role models like her for girls to look up to and aspire to be because she sure did that for me!
