No Foreigner Is Allowed Inside Israeli Borders Except Women Participating In The Miss Universe Pageant. Ummm, Okay Then.

With the whole world under crisis due to this pandemic for the past 2 years, many countries have closed their borders to ensure the virus does not spread and do more damage than it already has. And can you blame them? Heck, many states in India had done that too. With how much destruction Covid-19 has caused everyone is justifiably scared of this virus. However, some countries have started opening up their borders as more people get vaccinated against the virus. While Israel has not opened its borders to the general public, it is somehow letting in international women that are beautiful. Let me explain.

Despite being one of the first countries to close their borders and the current concerns about Omicron floating around, Israel still plans to host the Miss Universe pageant and invite beautiful women from all over the world to stay in their Red Sea resort city of Eilat in December. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov on Sunday, a day after Israel banned all foreigners from entering the country. The Israeli minister said that Miss Universe participants would be given PCR tests every 2 days and would have to undergo other precautionary measures.

According to reports, Minister Razvozov said before Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting, “This is an event that will be broadcast in 174 countries, a very important event, an event that Eilat, too, is very much in need of,” he added, “We will know how to manage this event. So, by using the waivers committee, we will have events like this, to which the country already committed itself and cannot cancel.” Israel is set to host the pageant on December 12.

While I understand that the Miss Universe pageant is important and that the participants work really hard to get where they are, I don’t know it is worth such a huge risk. It feels counterproductive for Israel to ban foreigners but allow these participants to enter the country. Moreover, with the new variant that we virtually don’t know much about, is it really worth risking so many people’s lives and health over this? I don’t think so.
