In An Attempt To Be Gender Inclusive, NHS Removes The Terms ‘Woman’ And ‘Women’ From Its Menopause Page

The chatter around being gender inclusive is growing louder and louder with every passing day. People everywhere are talking about creating an environment where being gender inclusive is the norm and I believe that one of the ways of making it possible is by being inclusive even in our vocab. Keeping that in mind, NHS has removed the terms ‘woman’ and ‘women’ from their menopause page in their latest update. And this step was taken to ensure inclusive language on its web pages. If you ask me, I’m liking where they’re going with this.

NHS recently removed the term ‘woman’ and ‘women’ from its menopause page when they recently updated it so as to be more gender inclusive. This is not the first time they’ve done it. Previously, they have removed the same two terms from its ovarian, womb, and cervical cancer landing web pages.

The reason behind this move by the NHS was to ensure that they are more gender inclusive. However, as per reports, the move didn’t sit well with Sajid Javid, Health Secretary of the UK. Criticizing the decision, he said, “You won’t be surprised to know that, as the Health Secretary, I think that your sex matters, your biological sex is incredibly important to make sure you get the right treatment, the very best treatment… I know there’s some sensitivity around this language, but we have to use common sense and use the right language so that we can give people the best possible patient care.”

Before the NHS removed the terms ‘woman’ and ‘women’ from its menopause page, the page read that menopause is when a woman stops having her periods and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. And now it reads, that menopause is a natural part of ageing when a woman’s oestrogen levels decline.

Speaking about the changes they’ve made on their landing pages, NHS said that they constantly review their website so as to ensure that the language they use is more gender inclusive, respectful, and relevant to the people reading.
