Male And Female New Zealand Cricketers Will Get Paid Equal Match Fees. Other Nations Need To Follow Suit!

In any professional sphere of life, women are always paid less than men. Be it in the entertainment industry, sports, or even plain corporate jobs, the pay divide exists even today and women have to work twice as hard to each a seat at the table. When it comes to sports, female players are not even encouraged to play let alone get paid as much as the male players are! But in what comes as a historic and happy move, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that the male and female cricket players will get paid the same match fees.

As per a report by New Zealand Cricket, the NZC, the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) and the other six organisations have signed an agreement for a period of five years stating that the female and male players will be paid the same match fees. This is applicable across all formats of cricket matches and tournaments. This pay equity agreement has been framed with the input of Yolanda Beattie who is a gender pay expert.

The agreement will come into effect from August 1, 2022. Apart from equal pay, female players will also be paid equity for travel, and accommodation and will also receive more training. The childcare and pregnancy clauses are retained from the original agreement. The total sum that the players will receive will also include match fees, retirement fund contributions, Trust IP payments, and insurance.

NZC chief executive David White has said that this is the ‘most important’ agreement in cricket as it sets the foundation to ‘fund, grow and develop’ the sport. He also went on to say that this agreement sheds light on how they are continuing to invest in women’s cricket.
