MP CM Says That Portions Of The Academic Curriculum That Depict Women As Inferior Need To Be Removed

When I think about the kind of men that are running our country, I can’t help but feel discouraged. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but our politicians aren’t exactly women-friendly. Actually, they are the pawns of patriarchy. Every time I come across a statement made by any of our politicians about women, I just automatically assume the worst. Considering the kind of sexist filth that they’ve spewed in the past, it isn’t that much of a stretch. However, this morning I was pleasantly surprised to read about the new initiative by MP Chief Minister, Shivraj Chouhan, wherein he wants to remove portions from the educational curriculum that are derogatory to women. This is a step in the right direction!

While addressing the inter-departmental group formed on women empowerment and child welfare under Atma-Nirbhar Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Chouhan said that the portion that is taught in schools that describes women in a derogatory manner needs to be removed immediately. He also called for academic auditing of the curriculum to make it more gender-neutral. This is a brilliant initiative and I have to admit I am a tad shocked. This is the same man who, a few months ago, wanted all women to be tracked by the police.

Shivraj Chouhan also wants a sense of equality by changing the terminology used to describe women professionals. For instance, a woman principal or woman teacher will become just a principal or teacher. A few other things discussed in the meeting were: health and nutritional security of a girl child, creation of an environment for respect for women, gender budgeting, promotion of property rights and economic empowerment for women. Shivraj Chouhan also said that Shaurya parties and self-help groups should work together to combat malnutrition, dowry cases and violence against women.

We love this initiative. On paper, it’s just what we need. Hopefully, Shivraj Chouhan’s government will execute it properly and keep all its promises.
