Can You Use Menstrual Cup If You Have Vaginismus?

You know, as a woman, I always feel that my body is a mystery case that I desperately want to solve but I just can’t do it because our bodies are so complicated, you know (it’s a fact and not an opinion). And recently I found out that many people suffer from a condition called Vaginismus and they were asking if they can wear a menstrual cup or not, this is quite a serious question, to be honest. So, as Menstrual Hygiene is finally here, we decided to find the answer to this very complicated question because solving difficult problems is our favourite thing. Let’s get started!

1. What Is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles of the vagina tighten up involuntarily when an object is entering it. Some people experience contraction in all situations, while some have it only when they are having sex but not with tampons, menstruation cups, or during medical examinations.

There are two types of vaginismus – Primary and Secondary. In Primary Vaginismus, the person feels extreme pain when an object enters the vagina, including a penis (penetrative sex), tampon, menstrual cup, and other things. This condition is also known as lifelong vaginismus. Secondary vaginismus is usually experienced after the person had a previous period of normal sexual function. This may be due to physical and psychological, or a combination of both. It is also known as acquired vaginismus.

2. Causes Of Vaginismus?

Well, the doctors haven’t found the exact cause of this condition, as per reports. However, it is often linked with past trauma and fear of having sexual intercourse. Infections and dryness can also cause pain during sex, so it’s important to consult the doctor before jumping to any conclusions.

First of all, consult an obstetrician-gynaecologist, they will do some tests to find the cause and you can start the treatment suggested by them. Kegel exercise, using different sizes of dilators also helps in this condition as they stretch the tissues. As vaginismus is linked to trauma and fear, therapy can also be an option.

4. Can You Use Menstrual If You Have Vaginismus?

Well, we know that inserting a menstrual cup inside the vagina can be difficult and painful. However, many people with vaginismus use menstrual cups and they said that it was an opportunity for them to learn something new about their bodies and it was relaxing as well. Most people use a menstrual cup which smaller in size, easy to use, flexible, and softer. And menstrual cups with a long stem and good grip are also a good option.
