Meghan Markle A Victim Of Coordinated Hate Campaign, Twitter Data Analysis Uncovered

We’re all accustomed to cancel culture, right? While it might seem like a fitting punishment to many where people go after someone on a virtual witch hunt and shame them for their actions or words, it’s actually quite cruel. The internet is a breeding ground for bullies and haters who are ready to incriminate anyone, for whatever reason. We have seen it happen over tweets, resurfaced videos, YouTube videos etc. One of the couples that have been subjected to this mass hate on social media platforms like Twitter is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

They have always been open about their decision to step back from their role as British royals and partly attributed that decision to the unwarranted hate and toxicity they received on social media. Recently, BuzzFeed News broke down an analysis by Bot Sentinel of more than 1,14,000 tweets about the couple and the 83 accounts responsible for around 70% of the negative and hateful content uncovered a targeted crusade towards sending hate to Meghan.

Recently, an analysis released by Bot Sentinel was aimed at studying the Twitter activity related to the Sussexes in which discovered that the majority of the hate and misinformation towards Meghan Markle and Harry comes from these few accounts whose main if the not primary goal is to create hate towards the couple. The analysis also uncovered the coordination amongst these accounts and they use their combined 187,631 followers to systematically spew more negativity about the couple.

According to BuzzFeed, a Twitter spokesperson told them that they’re, “actively investigating the information and accounts referenced in this report — we will take action on accounts that violate the Twitter Rules.” The couple currently has no online presence as Meghan Markle withdrew from social media, “for [her] own self-preservation.” Harry had followed up in a January interview that he and Meghan, “will revisit social media when it feels right for us — perhaps when we see more meaningful commitments to change or reform.”

Christopher Bouzy who is the CEO of Bot Sentinal said that this anti-Meghan Twitter agenda is unlike anything he has ever seen before. He said, “There’s no motive. Are these people who hate her? Is it racism? Are they trying to hurt [Harry and Meghan’s] credibility? Your guess is as good as ours.” Additionally, Bouzy claims that this hate campaign is not being pushed by bot accounts but actual humans. He stated, “This campaign comes from people who know how to manipulate the algorithms, manipulate Twitter, stay under the wire to avoid detection and suspension. This level of complexity comes from people who know how to do this stuff, who are paid to do this stuff.”

Meghan Markle has been the object of people’s contempt for a while now, that too for no good reason. Be it her race or be it the fact that many deemed her unfit to be a royal, people have commented on her and her relationship with Harry, questioning her integrity. I think people should learn to reserve their judgements about someone else’s relationship and not feel the need to unnecessarily scrutinize something that isn’t their business. I guess we all can agree with what Bouzy said, “There’s a difference between free speech and literally harassing someone.”
