Meet Priyanka Mohite, The First Indian Woman To Scale The Worlds Tenth Highest Mountain In The World, Mt Annapurna

Isn’t it funny how up until a few years ago, a woman’s place was in the kitchen, raising children and catering to their husbands every whim and fancy? Cut to today. Every profession has women doing jobs that were once deemed fit only for men. Even a field as stereotypically macho as mountaineering now has a woman on top (pun intended!). I am talking about Priyanka Mohite. A mountaineer who just became the first Indian woman to scale Mt Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain in the world. What an incredible feat!

On 16 April, Priyanka Mohite scaled the tenth highest mountain in the world. Mt Annapurna. The 26-year-old mountaineer from Satara, Maharashtra, is the first Indian woman to accomplish this great feat. It’s such a proud moment for all womankind! Here’s a bit of general knowledge about Mt Annapurna. It’s a massif in the Himalayas located in Nepal that includes one peak over 8,000 metres. And it’s also considered to be one of the toughest mountains to climb.

News of Priyanka’s achievement was shared by her employer Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the Executive Chairperson of Biocon Limited. She took to Twitter to share a picture of Priyanka holding the Indian flag atop the peak. Along with the picture, Kiran Mazumdar wrote, “Our colleague Priyanka Mohite scaled the peak of Mt. Annapurna, (8091 metres) 10th highest mountain in the world, on 16th April 2021 at 1.30 pm. – first Indian woman to do so! We at @SyngeneIntl are so very proud of her.”

This isn’t the first time Priyanka Mohite has made us proud. In 2013, she scaled the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. In 2018, she climbed Mount Lhotse. And in 2016 she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. This is absolutely brilliant. Priyanka is also the recipient of the Maharashtra Government’s Shiv Chhatrapati state award for adventure sports for 2017-2018.

According to reports, Priyanka Mohite was passionate about mountain climbing since childhood. In her teenage years, she started to scale mountains in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra. In 2012, she scaled Bandarpunch, a mountain massif of the Garhwal division of the Himalayas, in Uttarakhand.

She is making history and we are here for it!
