Medical Experts Have Now Said That A Woman Can Get Vaccinated Anytime After She Has Delivered.

There are has been a lot of chaos and controversy surrounding the vaccination drive in India. From people not trusting the vaccines to there being a major shortage to celebrities and people with power getting preferential treatment, it has been a rollercoaster ride. With the way it’s going, I don’t see how the entire country is going to get vaccinated but these vaccines are our best bet to end this pandemic and hence, this drive needs to be prioritized. That being said, there is a question that is playing on everyone’s mind: can pregnant and lactating women be vaccinated? While the government is strictly opposed to the idea, medical and health experts are saying that it’s completely safe. In fact, recently, a lot of medical experts have said that pregnant women can get vaccinated anytime after they’ve delivered. It’s time they are included in our vaccination drive as well.

Medical experts are now stressing the need to allow pregnant and lactating women to get vaccinated. They said that these women can get the jab anytime after they have delivered their baby. And even though the government has recently opened the vaccination drive up to pregnant and lactating mothers, it’s not a common occurrence. Experts also said that women can safely breastfeed after being vaccinated as well.

Dr Khan Amir Maroof said that the baby faces no risk from drinking the milk of a vaccinated mother. He said, “There is no reason to delay the vaccination after delivery.” He also further added that lactating mothers need to take the same amount of precautions as the general population since they aren’t at any extra risk.

Talking about why the government hasn’t yet recommended vaccines for pregnant mothers Dr Maroof said, “This is because the Covid vaccine trials were not done on pregnant women and their safety and efficacy related data is not available. The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India has, however, recommended that the Covid vaccine should be given to pregnant women as the risk of getting infected with Covid and mortality is high during this pandemic. This seems to be higher than the risk due to the side effects of the vaccine.”

This is what a lot of women needed to hear. In fact, another commonly believed myth is also that women can’t get vaccinated while they are on their periods. Clearing this myth up, is Dr Loveleena Nadir, senior consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician. She said that the vaccine can be taken at any stage of the menstrual cycle.

Dr Jaideep Malhotra, the former president of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India and founder of the Infertility Centre of Rainbow IVF, said that more awareness needs to be spread about the fact that the vaccines do not contain the live virus. Hence, they are safe for pregnant and lactating mother and will not cause any severe complications. He said that since vaccinating pregnant women is going to take care of two lives, the process needs to be put into action.

Hopefully, the government will listen to the pleas of all these medical experts and expedite the process of vaccinating pregnant and lactating women. It’s more clear now than ever that women can get vaccinated post their deliveries without worrying about any risks. If we want to get ahead of the COVID curve, it’s vital that everyone be vaccinated sooner rather than later.
