Mahua Moitra Issues Clarification For Comments On Goddess Kaali Amid Film Poster Row
The poster of a documentary film titled Kaali has caused a huge uproar on social media after Goddess Kaali was shown smoking on it. Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, on Tuesday, said that for her, Goddess Kaali is a ‘meat-eating’ and ‘alcohol accepting’ deity. She also went on to state the example of Tarapith temple in Birbhum district located in West Bengal which is a shakti peeth and said that people will see the sadhus smoking there. Further, Mahua Moitra also said that as a Goddess Kaali worshipper, can imagine the deity in any form as she pleases.
Her comments did not sit well with many people who have called her out for coming in support of the Kaali poster. In response to this, Moitra took to her Twitter handle to issue a clarification to state that she neither support any film nor did she mention the word ‘smoking’ anywhere.
Her tweet read, “To all you sanghis- lying will NOT make you better hindus. I NEVER backed any film or poster or mentioned the word smoking. Suggest you visit my Maa Kali in Tarapith to see what food & drink is offered as bhog.

Her party, the TMC, has chosen to disassociate itself from Mahua Moitra’s comments and also condemned them. They issued a tweet mentioning that the comments were her personal opinion and they do not ‘endorse’ such comments either. The tweet read, “The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments.”

A police complaint has also been filed against director Leena Manimekalai, whose film Kaali’s poster is the cause of this mess.
