In MP, ‘Upper Class’ Men Beat Up Dalit Family For Sending 16 YO Daughter To School. Is This How We Will Beti Padhao Beti Bachaao?
Living in the city, we never have to face issues like casteism and untouchability and therefore, remain in the dark about rural people facing these problems on an everyday basis. We dismiss the upper caste and lower caste distinction as we swat away flies because they are not of concern to us. But this latest piece of news from Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district has brought to light how the family members of a 16-year-old Dalit caste girl were beaten up for sending her to school.
As per a report by The Times Of India, the people who beat the teenager’s kin up were belonging to the ‘upper caste’ section of the village. They rained blows on them because they sent the girl to school against the village’s policy. In her police complaint, the girl said that the perpetrators stopped her when she was returning home from school. They also asked her how ‘dare’ she goes to school when ‘no girl in the village was allowed to do so’.
When the girl went home and complained about the same to her parents, the upper caste men also beat them up. It is also reported that five members of the teenager’s family have been injured in this altercation. The school administration has denied the allegations that the girls of the village are not encouraged to be educated. Reports also state that the family members of the girl were beaten up with lathis.
The girl in her FIR to the police has also mentioned that the ones who beat her family members up were four young men. The report by TOI also reported a villager came forward to say that a ‘certain’ class of people in the village do not want girls to be educated.
