Live Tinted And Mattel Get Together To Finally Create A Relatable Indian Barbie And It’s Not For Sale, What Is The Point?

Recently, entrepreneur Deepica Mutyala (CEO, Live Tinted) has a collaborative branch with Mattel, and together, they have managed to create a change. They collaborated with Mattel’s Barbie to launch the first Indian ‘CEO Barbie’ doll. This doll finally dares to represent Indians in all their glory. Finally, there’s an Indian Barbie doll that doesn’t represent Indians with ethnic clothing and heavy sets of Indian jewellery. This is good!

This modern Barbie wears a beautiful red power suit along with really pretty and delicate gold South-Asian jewellery, representing our heritage, culture and history. “Her skin is tinted, her eyes big, and brows bold, She wears her jhumkas and bangles proud with her power suit. She is ready to take on the world. Her identity is hers.” Mutyala told Vogue India about the doll.

“It’s a dream come true to be collaborating with Barbie. Our sole mission as a brand at Live Tinted is to dismantle colourism in the beauty industry and to emphasise that representation matters. To be able to show young, tinted girls everywhere that there is a place for them in this world through such an iconic and prominent figure such as Barbie is something I know younger Deepica would be extremely proud of.” She further added.

Alas, this Barbie doll which could’ve made so many little girls dream bigger, hope for a beautiful tomorrow and feel connected to the Barbie brand in ways that the older generations just couldn’t, this opportunity was stolen from right under our noses. This doll isn’t really for sale. In fact, it was just created to make Live Tinted and Mattel’s new hue seem like an enticing choice.

Yes, unfortunately, once again, a true representation that had the ability to make a positive change has been trumped and turned into a marketing technique to sell a beauty product. This limited edition ‘hue stick’ is set to retail in its dedicated e-commerce store with international shipping available. It is designed to be special. It can be worn on the cheeks as well as the lips.

The deep red hue stick mimics the makeup that has been worn by the Barbie doll. Sigh. . . when will the industry learn the value of a good move in order to just, make a positive change?
