Twitter User Calls Out Deo Ad That Makes Light Of Women’s Constant Fear Of Rape. Who Is Approving This Crap?

I haven’t watched television in about 4 years now and I remember back when I used to watch television and see all kinds of ads. And TBH, I’ve come across some truly problematic ads in my 25 years of life. The worst ones were the deodorant ads which constantly sexualised women. I mean, c’mon women to deos are not like bees to honey. Can we just be a little more realistic? That being said, I just came across something that reminded me of all the problematic and triggering ads I’ve seen throughout my life. But let me begin with a TRIGGER WARNING. While scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a post shared by an Instagram account, Andheri West Shit Posting, calling out an ad for Layer’r Shot perfume. And before I go on and begin my rant on everything that is problematic in this ad, check out this video.

The video was sourced from a Twitter user who called out the insensitive and derogatory ad made by this deodorant brand which hints at rape, gang-rape might I add. The Twitter user pointed out that there should be some regulations for ad and went on to call the advertisement “nothing short of disgusting”. She went on to add that while she knew that it was just an advertisement and wasn’t real but it did trigger her to the point that she felt the fear. She slammed the brand for creating an ad on “the fears of millions of women”.

Another Twitter user shared another ad from the same brand which was yet another triggering video with a similar storyline.

Soon after the tweet went viral, another user shared the tweet and tagged the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). Responding to the tweet, the ASCI called it a “serious breach” of their code and said that action has been initiated against the advertiser and the ad has been suspended.

Now, I’m going to speak (or write) my two cents. WTF on earth is this ad? Did no one really think for even one second before shooting and airing this ad? Where is the censorship? We live in a country where consensual sex scenes and kissing scenes are censored and swear words are censored but advertisements hinting at gang rape are permitted? That too on a platform like television which is easily accessible by all including little kids. And mind you, the makers of this ad clearly did not take into consideration the fact that it could trigger rape and abuse victims to no end. The double standards and insensitivity like this is completely unacceptable. And I’m not even going to talk about the fear it would create in a woman’s heart to be in a situation like this ad.

It’s high time we call out these problematic ads. We’re in 2022 guys!
