Justice Rekha Palli Of Delhi HC Gave A Sassy Reply To An Advocate Who Called Her ‘Sir’. We’re Glad She Called It
Have you ever realised that most of the time the salutations we use for people in positions are very gender-biased? Don’t agree? Well, let me present you with an instance that recently took place during a hearing in Delhi High Court (HC). An advocate while presenting in the Delhi HC constantly kept on addressing Justice Rekha Palli as ‘sir’ and when called out for it, he justified it saying that it was because of the Chair she was sitting in. Yep, that’s the level of sexism we have ingrained in us and the sad thing is we don’t even realise it.
During a hearing in Delhi HC, an advocate kept on addressing Justice Rekha Palli as “sir”. After which the judge called him out and asked him to not call her so. And the reason he gave as a justification was that it was because of the Chair she was sitting in, to which she gave quite the sassy reply.
After being addressed as ‘sir’, Justice Rekha Palli said to the lawyer, “I am not Sir. I hope you can make that out” To which the advocate replied, “Sorry, it’s because of the Chair you’re sitting in.”

As per reports, Justice Rekha Palli of Delhi HC sassily replied to it saying, “Then that’s even worse if after all this time you think Chairs is for sirs. If the younger members don’t stop differentiating, then what hope do we have for the future?”
Honestly, after this reply, I’m a fan of the judge. She points out the very sexism that most of us are taught from the very society we live in. We are taught that women are supposed to be at home and even if they are working, the positions of power are secured for men and not for women. And that very thought needs to change!
