India Is All Set To Host The Women’s World Boxing Championships In 2023

Women’s sports haven’t been taken seriously throughout the world and slowly but surely, that is changing. Women have been taking strides in almost every field and sports are no different. And now news has come along that India will be hosting the women’s world boxing championships in 2023 and I am excited about this!

In 2023, India will host the women’s world boxing championships in New Delhi, two years after losing the opportunity to host the men’s competition for failing to pay the required fee to the international governing organisation. The world championship for men has never been hosted in India, however, the women’s championship will be held in India for the third time after being held in New Delhi in 2006 and 2018.

Boxing Federation of India (BFI) Secretary General Hemanta confirmed that they hold the right to host the women’s world championship and want to do so somewhere between the end of March and the first week of April. The tournament dates will be decided while Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association (IBA), is in the nation for the first time.

The fact that India will be hosting the event is a significant step because the International Boxing Association, formerly known as (AIBA), terminated its contract with BFI after Serbia obtained the right to host the event in 2021 because India failed to pay the hosting fee. Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal in the flyweight division at the most recent women’s competition in Turkey, giving India three medals.
This news comes after the recent news that BCCI will equal the pay for female and male cricketers. It is encouraging to see India be this supportive of female sports players. I am certain that seeing this support will encourage more women and young girls to want to pursue sports.
