In UP, Two Men Tried To Yank Off A Woman’s Sari To Stop Her From Filing Her Election Nomination Forms

India is the world’s largest democracy. On paper, it’s described as a melting pot and on film, it’s portrayed as spiritual. Elections are held at regular intervals, government representatives are elected from the people and there is a strong opposition in place. The reality though is slightly different. Votes are bought, officials are corrupt and we are just a few steps away from a complete political upheaval. But that’s on a larger scale. Let’s narrow it down, shall we? I’ll give you one recent example that talks about everything that is wrong with our political system. You see, in UP a Samajwadi Party worker was mistreated. Two men from the opposition party assaulted her and yanked her sari. All this because they didn’t want her to file her nomination forms for the upcoming local elections. Some democracy we live in.

On Thursday, a disturbing video emerged from Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. It showed a woman, a Samajwadi Party worker, being assaulted by two men who are reportedly from the opposition party. They tried to pull off her sari to stop her from filing her nomination forms for the upcoming local elections. These two goons also snatched this woman’s nomination forms to ensure that their candidate ran unopposed in the elections. This is unacceptable. These men clearly have no respect for women and that’s shameful.

Samajwadi chief Akhilesh Yadav has alleged that the two accused were BJP workers. In a video statement, he called them, “power hungry goons of Yogi Adityanath (Chief Minister)”. Of course, we have no confirmation that they indeed were BJP workers. But what political party the attackers belong to isn’t important here. Everyone is missing the point. A woman was brutally assaulted in broad daylight, her sari pulled off and she was nearly stripped. In what world is this behaviour permissible?

Uttar Pradesh is one of the worst Indian states for women. Rapes, murders and dowry deaths have become so frequent that no one even bats an eye. Hopefully, whoever is elected this time will be able to overturn the horrid condition of women in UP.
