A reality that is true for several people in a lot of places, it definitely isn’t for men and women in this village of  Madhya Pradesh. We say this after news reports have emerged two men being assaulted for merely being friends with a woman.

In Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district has left us two men were assaulted and their heads partially shaved off. All this because they were friends with a 19-year-old girl from an influential family and decided to help her out.

The complainant who has been identified as Rajkumar Deharia, was friends with a 19-year-old woman from a rather influential and powerful family belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community in Jabalpur. He told the police that the woman had confided in him about how she was not allowed to go out and did not even have a phone to communicate with him, which is when Rajkumar borrowed his friend’s mobile phone and gave it to her.

The accused – father and other relatives – then proceeded to shave their heads off and put garlands of shoes around their necks to humiliate them further. Erm, all this because they were friends with their daughter?

The two victims even spoke about how they were threatened to be harmed if they reached out to the police about the assault. The accused which include the woman’s father and three other relatives have been arrested and booked under the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities).

A police officer shared, “A case has been filed. Rajkumar Deharia had given the mobile phone to the girl from the Yadav community. The family got upset and that is why they beat them up. We got the information on May 27 and took immediate action. The accused were arrested and the court has remanded them into police custody.”
