In Bhopal, A Mob Forced A Girl Riding Pillion On A Scooter To Take Off Her Burkha. Why So Intolerant?
The country we’re living in is not the same as it was a couple of years ago. I believe that we, as citizens of this country, have become extremely rigid in our religious beliefs and intolerant towards other religions. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the presence of other religions makes most people very uncomfortable. One of the reasons behind our hostile behaviour towards other religions—especially Islam‚ comes from the hate-mongering sold by our politicians. Recently, a Muslim girl in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was forced to remove her burkha by a mob who suspected her to be traveling with a Hindu. How is this justified?
On Saturday, a girl in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh was forced to remove her burkha and her face covering by a mob. The reason They suspected that the man with whom the girl was on the scooter was a Hindu.
The incident took place in Islam Nagar in Bhopal and a video of the same incident went viral on the internet. Shockingly (but not surprisingly), no case was registered in connection with the mob incident but according to a police official, preventive action was taken against two people from the mob.

In the video that went viral on the internet, a man who was making the video and was from the mob was heard telling the girl in a burkha that she was disgracing their community. And while he was telling her this, some of the women that belonged to the mob were seen forcing her to remove her burkha and face covering to see her face.
The reports state that RS Verma, the Intkhedi police station in charge, regarding the mob incident said, “A youth and the girl arrived in Islam Nagar in the afternoon. Some people stopped them and asked the girl to take off her burkha and show her face. It is suspected that the people believed the man was Hindu and the girl Muslim… No case has been registered but preventive action under section 151 of IPC was taken against two men seen in the video, who were let off with a warning to not repeat such an act.”

Honestly, I don’t think a warning would do anything to those people in the mob who are blindly following this hate-driven idealogy. India is a secular state. But it seems that its citizens have forgotten all about secularism. As people who have always taken pride in our history and in our unity, how do we forget that at the end of the day we all belong to the same country and are essentially a part of the same society? How do we forget that the things that differentiate us are also the things that bind us together? I really hope that in the near future, we as a society become more tolerant and accepting of other religions.
