This news scares me to the core, to think that we women are not safe anywhere, and any man with a camera might be recording us from anywhere. The slew of cases that are coming to light in our country about girls being filmed in hostel washrooms is just getting disturbing each day. You all might be aware of the deplorable situation at Chandigarh University where a girl has been accused of leaking obscene videos of 60 girls bathing. Just days into this case, we have another similar kind of situation reported from Mumbai. A student from IIT Bombay has filed a complaint against a college canteen worker who was allegedly filming her in the hostel washroom.
This incident was reported to the Powai police and as per news reports, the shameful act happened on Sunday night. The IIT student reported the whole crime to the police, according to which the accused tried to film her objectionable video through a slit in the hostel washroom. Further investigations showed that the canteen employee might have climbed from the pipes to reach the girl’s bathroom window. The reports also inform that a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 354C has been registered against the culprit.

Post this case, the college authorities have taken some urgent actions like installing CCTV cameras and lights. This is actually sad, that incidents like these need to happen to make the authorities realise the necessities for a women’s hostel. Why was there negligence in taking care of these security measures, even after knowing the kind of crimes happening against women?
It’s sad to see that while we have campaigns about women’s education, we are not so serious about ensuring the safety of women in educational campuses. If women don’t feel safe in places like this, how are they to progress? We hope that strict actions are taken against the accused.
