Data Reveals More Women Attempt Suicide Than Men. So Many Factors Are Making Our Mental Health Fragile

You know, we all know a lot of people who say that they prioritise mental health over everything but the reality turns out to be way different (it is what it is). Mental health is not a taboo topic anymore, it is something that everyone talks about openly. However, when it comes to actually supporting or helping people who are struggling with mental health, there is barely any scope for it as everyone is dealing with different issues. And the recent data about the suicide rate is extremely worrying. The data from the Human Development Report 2021/22 revealed that more women than men try to commit suicide every year.

Yesterday, the world celebrated a very important international day, October 10 is marked as World Mental Health Day which is dedicated to global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigmas. However, the data of the recent Human Development Report 2021/22 shows that more women attempt suicide than men every year. The report also highlighted that even though more men than women die by suicide, more women try to take their own lives.

The Human Development Report 2021/22 also revealed that over seven lakh people die by suicide every year and it is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 years.

The data analysis was released last month as part of the HDR by the United Nations Development Programme. The data is significant as it focuses on mental health and its importance in enabling and achieving human development goals.

It is saddening that many people, especially women decided to take their own lives every year due to unbearable psychological pain and lack of resources. There are many factors that are making women’s mental health fragile and they continue to suffer in silence.
