Groom’s Mother Beat Him Up With Chappal On Stage For Marrying A Woman Of Another Caste

The way I see marriage, it’s a very close and intimate relationship between two people who will be spending their lives together. If you’re the one who has to build with them, have sex with them, live with them and all that, you should have full freedom to choose your partner. And yet, many families don’t see it that way. For them, it’s a decision they feel they should take because often, they feel ownership over their children, even if the bride and the groom are two consenting adults.

Top it with the fact that most Indians cringe at interfaith or inter-caste marriages, and we have a plethora cases of angry parents. At best, they’ll disown you; at worse, we have honour killings. Recently, a video went viral that features a couple getting married, and the groom’s mother intervening by beating him up with a chappal.

In the video you can see the groom and the bride on a lotus shaped elevated stage that keeps rotating. A woman, who is believed to be the mother of the groom climbs the stairs leading to the stage with a chappal in her hand. She tries to step in but the lotus petals blocked her way. Determined to beat her son up, she broke a petal, and tried hitting him with a chappal. Just then people escort her away.

Apparently, the woman, who is identified as the groom’s mother was unhappy that he was marrying a girl of another caste. The groom however, chose to marry the woman of his choice anyway, leaving his mother frustrated.

The couple got married in a court, much against the wishes of the groom’s family. The bride’s father however decided to do a proper wedding ceremony post that. That is when the unhappy mother decided to make her displeasure known. Well, at least the groom took a stand.
