Google Hires Former Indian Govt. Officer Archana Gulati As New Public Policy Head In India

Big tech companies in India these days have been hiring former government officials amid the stricter laws with regard to data and privacy under the PM Modi led federal government. These companies are also battling the competition law scrutiny. Amid all of this, the buzz is that Alphabet Inc’s Google has hired an ex-civil servant Archana Gulati as their new public policy head in India. Archana formerly worked at PM Narendra Modi’s federal think tank Niti Aayog and India’s antitrust watchdog the Competition Commission of India.

Who Is Archana Gulati?

Archana Gulati has been a long-term Indian government employee who retired in April 2021. According to media reports, a Google India spokesperson has confirmed that Archana Gulati has been hired as the new public policy head of the company. But the official declined to elaborate further and refused to be named as the hiring decision has not been made public yet.

Archana Gulati started working as DDG/Joint Administrator (Finance) at the Universal Service Obligation Fund of India (USOF) of the Department of Telecommunications of the Indian government. She worked there from May 2007 to February 2012 after which worked as a financial advisor in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of the Indian government from February 2012 to July 2014. From July 2014 to June 2016, Archana Gulati worked as an adviser in the Head Combination Division of India’s antitrust body, the Competition Commission of India.

Archana Gulati then trained at the Indian Institute of Public Administration for 10 months after which she became the Senior Deputy Director-General, Officer on Special Duty with Secretary Telecom at India’s Department of Telecommunications from May 2017 to August 2019. From August 2019 to April 2021, Archana worked as the Joint Secretary of Digital Communications at the National Institute for Transforming India, Niti Aayog of the Indian government.

Earlier last year, Meta Platforms Inc had hired a retired Indian and state government employee, Rajiv Aggarwal as its head of policy. Walmart too had hired a former Indian antitrust and federal government employee Anand Jha in 2019 as its India public policy head.
