Female Dogs Do Experience Periods. Here’s What You Need To Know About It.
Firstly I hope all you pet lovers have at least wished one dog a “Happy Dog’s Day”. And what’s better than this day to increase our awareness about dogs, especially the female ones. I have often heard people say that the period cycle is one reason why nobody generally opts for a female dog. Well, their loss. Because have a female dog is one of the most beautiful things that has ever happened in my life. She is adorable, loving, and caring, and understands every emotion that sometimes even humans fail to get. My female dog has now entered her adult life and has also experienced her period cycles. It is the time when female dogs need the utmost care and love, however, if you are all aware of this phase in their life, you might really not give it as an excuse for not having a female dog.
Period/ Heat Or Estrous Cycle
The reproductive phase in a female dog’s life is known Estrous cycle, and Estrous is also in simple terms called “Heat”. The reproductive cycle varies according to the breed of the dogs and also depends on their size. The general timeline for dogs to get their periods is twice in a year, and it lasts for up to two to three weeks. The starting of the heat cycle also differs among breeds. For as to the smaller breed of dogs, they start to experience their reproductive cycle after hitting six months of age. Whereas for the bigger breed of dogs, this heat cycle hits a little late, most probably when turning one year.
Phase Of The Heat Cycle
Don’t worry, dogs do not bleed like women. Their leakage is very less in comparison to ours. However, they do experience mood swings and if you know your dog right, you can very well sense it. Now during the first phase of their Estrous cycle, the vulva swells up and there is some pink vaginal discharge. Now, the dogs experience periods in droplets, sometimes it is hardly noticeable too. You might just see some red spots on their beds on the floor, so keep a lookout for that. The cycle starts with red blood discharges, but it changes intensity and during the last few days, it takes the colour and consistency of water.

Things To Keep In Mind
Dogs also experience bodily and mental changes during this time, very similar to that of a woman experiencing puberty. Therefore, it is important to take care of your dog’s hygiene too. You can use a diaper, and dog panties are available too. But make sure that you change the diaper frequently and keep the vaginal area clean and dry. Keep them away from male dogs because the smell from your dog might make them aggressive. Keep them warm, and well fed, and play with them if they ask you to. Give them some extra attention and love, that’s what they need most. Also, if you experience anything abnormal in their menstruation cycle, consult a vet asap.

This is also an option that is kept by the owners of the female dogs when they do not wish to breed their pets or have them mating. It is a process of removing the female dog’s reproductive parts like the uterus and ovaries. It makes the dog sterilised. However, this is up to you, but whatever the decisions are, you should always keep yourself well-informed because you are making a decision for a living and breathing species who lack the ability to speak for themselves. Therefore, always be thoughtful.
