Dainik Bhaskar Says It Will Stop Referring To Women’s Skin Tone In Matrimonial Ads. Please Do It For Men As Well!

For all their lives, women have been told that the most important thing about them is their appearance. Not their personalities or brains but their looks. And moreover, they have been pushed to fit mounds set by the society they grew up in. How many times have we seen matrimonial ads that focus on the woman’s skin tone, size, height etc over their education or personality? While we have a long way to go, we have started taking the first steps as Dainik Bhaskar, which is India’s most circulated Hindi newspaper has decided to stop referring to skin colour in matrimonial ads.

Be it a woman’s size, height, skin tone etc, they are all openly talked about and it is normalised that people in India don’t think that there is anything wrong with specifying these requirements when they go looking for rishtaas for their sons.

Dainik Bhaskar took to Twitter and announced this change in the way matrimonial ads are presented. The tweet in Hindi was captioned, “Matrimonial ads will not use skin colour descriptors for daughters.”

While we are nowhere near the correct representation of women, we are trying and getting closer. However, I do wish that fixations on men’s appearance would also be addressed here. While this step by Dainik Bhaskar is in the right direction, I look forward to having the same treatment towards men and their representation as well.
