Saudi Authorities Disqualify Camels From Beauty Contest Over Botox. Yaar, What Is This Camel Body Shaming?

We’ve heard all about celebs getting facelifts, Botox, nose and lip jobs, and all kinds of cosmetic surgeries. While most people consider this wrong, we beg to differ. Everyone has the right to look the way they want including camels! Yeah, you read that right. We said camels! Why should only humans look good and have access to cosmetic surgeries? Don’t camels want to look pretty too? But it is unfair to use Botox injections and other artificial touch-ups to win a beauty contest! And it seems like camels in Saudi Arabia have been doing that.

According to a report by Saudi Press Agency, authorities have disqualified over 40 camels who used facelifts, Botox injections, and other cosmetic alterations and touch-ups to look more attractive for their annual camel beauty contest. This beauty pageant was a part of Saudi Arabia’s famous King Abdulaziz Camel Festival. This month-long festival, which kicked off earlier this month in the desert northeast of Saudi’s Riyadh, invites breeders of the most beautiful camels for a beauty contest that has prize money of a whopping $66 million. The winners of this beauty contest are decided based on the shape of the camels’ heads, necks, humps, dress as well as postures.

As per the pageant rules, any and all cosmetic surgeries, alterations, or touch-ups including Botox injections are strictly prohibited. In a bid to clamp down on artificially enhanced camels, the jurors of the beauty contest are using “specialized and advanced” technology to detect tampering, reported the state-run Saudi Press Agency. The report further stated that the authorities have discovered that several breeders not only stretched out the lips and noses of the camels but also used hormones to boost the beasts’ muscles of the animals. Their heads and lips have also been injected with Botox to make them bigger, fillers have been used to relax their faces and rubber bands were used to inflate body parts.

Sharing the shocking details of animal abuse, the Saudi Press Agency stated that the organizers of the camel beauty contest are keen on halting these acts of ‘tampering and deception in the beautification of camels’. It further stated that strict penalties will be imposed on manipulators.

FYI, this camel beauty contest is a part of a huge carnival that also includes camel races and sales along with several other festivities that showcase thousands of dromedaries. The aim of this event is to highlight the role of camels in the kingdom’s Bedouin tradition and heritage. In fact, camel breeding is a multimillion-dollar industry in the region and many similar events take place across the area.

Well…though we do believe that camels have the right to look just as pretty, we cannot help but condemn these shameful acts of animal cruelty in the name of the beautification of camels.
