Bilkis Bano Case: Supreme Court Issues Notice To Gujarat Government On Release Of 11 Rapists
The release of the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case shook the entire nation. People have begun demanding answers on how the criminals were released and welcomed back into society with open arms when they ruined a woman’s life. Pleas and petitions were filed in the Supreme Court wherein the release of the 11 rapists was challenged. In what comes as a new development in the case, the Supreme Court has decided to hear a petition that has challenged the release of the convicts under Gujarat state’s remission policy.
SC To Hear Petition Against Release Of Bilkis Bano Case Convicts
As per a report by the Indian Express, the Chief Justice of India, N V Ramana, headed the bench that decided to hear the petition. CJI Ramana has issued a notice to the Gujarat government asking it to file its response pertaining to this matter. The issue will be heard in court in two weeks’ time again.

The Supreme Court has also asked the petitioners to make the 11 convicts released as parties in the matter against whom action can be taken. Public interest litigations (PIL) have been filed by Subhashini Ali, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo Member, Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress MP, and one other yet not named petitioner. In their petition to the Supreme Court, they have all challenged the remission policy under which the 11 convicts of the Bilkis Bano rape case were released on August 15, 2022.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old when she was gang raped in a truck as she and her family were fleeing to save their lives post the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002. She was also pregnant at the crime and 14 of her family members were killed on the spot as well. Among the deceased was her three-year-old daughter as well.
