Bihar DGP Blames Rape Victim Instead Of Helping Her, Gets A Call From CM Nitish Kumar. Sick Of This Victim Blaming!

Bihar DGP Blames Rape Victim Instead Of Helping Her, Gets A Call From CM Nitish Kumar. Sick Of This Victim Blaming!

While growing up, I had heard about victim-blaming but I don’t think I understood the extent of it until I faced it myself. In this one incident, when I was in Chennai travelling to college in the local bus, a man groped me and I slapped him for doing so. When I reached college and my classmates asked me why I looked furious, I narrated the entire incident, and one of the girls in the class had the audacity (yes, the audacity) to ask me what I was wearing. I was even more furious than I had previously been. Why? Because well, it was him who did the wrong thing but somehow it became about me and what I was wearing. How is this right in any way? But then I realised victim-blaming is something that we’ve been taught in our society. I mean, have you ever heard the nonsensical things people with power say? (Remember Goa CM’s statement on the gang-rape case) And this is not the first time that this has happened. During a programme where CM Nitish Kumar was speaking, a rape victim got up and revealed how the DGP of Bihar accused her of the rape incident rather than helping her with her complaint. Luckily, the CM was taking none of that and called the DGP to instantly look into the rape victim’s case.

During a public interaction programme, ‘Janata ke darbar mein mukhyamantri’, held on Monday by Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s Chief Minister, in Patna, a rape victim accused the Director General of Police (DGP) SK Singhal of accusing girls of provoking men. She even blamed the investigating officer (IO) of her case for not listening to her and for not returning her calls.

Talking to the CM of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, the rape victim, who is a Naubatpur resident, said that she had filed a complaint with Rupaspur police station and yet no action had been taken so far. She even claimed that her IO does not even now return her calls.

The rape victim further added that she even had gone and made an appeal to the Bihar DGP but he ended up accusing her instead of helping her. The woman claimed that the DGP held the girls responsible for rape and stated that it is the women who provoke men to commit such crimes. She also told the CM Nitish Kumar that after hearing this, she felt that she had no other choice than to commit suicide while also mentioning that she wrote a number of applications to officers of different statures regarding her case.

Upon hearing this, CM Nitish Kumar immediately called up the DGP and asked him to start an investigation regarding the matter of the rape victim. The reports suggest that this is not the first time DGP SK Singhal has expressed his ridiculous perspective. In fact, in December he had said that women who leave home for marriage with consent from their parents either end up as sex workers or dead. Seriously, what?

Honestly, I believe that Bihar’s CM should even start investigating the DGP as well. I mean, these are the kinds of mindsets that plague the society we live in.
