Anju Bobby George Named World Athletics Woman Of Year, Makes India Proud!

Let’s all agree, this year has been the year of Indian women athletes. I mean, do I even have to list down all the women athletes in India that created history? I think not, cause you really can’t forget the amazing year they’ve had. And this time, we have one more Indian athlete that has made India proud even after retiring! Yep, I’m talking about none other than Anju Bobby George. The only one who created history when she won a bronze medal in the long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. I mean, Anju Bobby George, after all, was the first Indian to ever win a medal in World Championships in Athletics in jumping. And now that she has retired, her active participation in the sport by grooming young athletes and encouraging young girls to take up the sport has earned her the World Athletics’ Woman of the Year Award. So so proud!

On Thursday, the 44-year-old retired Indian athlete Anju Bobby George stated that she was humbled and honoured to have won the award of Woman of the Year by World Athletics for her active participation in the sport.

The World Athletics took to their Twitter to congratulate Anju Bobby for winning such a prestigious award. They wrote, “Congratulations to @anjubobbygeorg1 on being crowned this year’s Woman of the Year at the #WorldAthleticsAwards Her efforts in advancing the sport in India as well as inspiring more women to follow in her footsteps make her more than a worthy recipient of this year’s award.”

The Indian athlete tweeted back on Thursday stating how “honoured” and “humbled” she was to receive the Woman of the Year award. Anju Bobby George who opened her own training academy back in 2016, said that there was no better feeling for her than to train young athletes and “give back to the sport” that gave her so much. She concluded by thanking them for recognizing her efforts.

As per The Indian Express, the long jump star has not only groomed and encouraged young athletes/girls to take up the sport but also has been a voice for change and gender equality in the country. Anju Bobby George has guided many young girls to take up sports.

Anju Bobby George was awarded a Padma Shri and Arjuna Award for Athletics for her dedication and hard work in the long jump sport. So, it was about time that her involvement in the sports was honoured with a Woman of the Year award by World Athletics.

Honestly, in a country like India where sports are meant to be only for men, watching all these women athletes create history makes me so so proud. And watching the entire world recognise their efforts and dedication, makes me extremely happy!
