Alia Bhatt Named PETA India’s 2021 Person Of The Year, Says “If You Love Me, Then Please Love Animals Even More.”

I think we are all aware of the dark side of the fashion industry. Other than the promotion of unhealthy body standards, more and more humanitarian evils of the industry have come forward. Moreover, not to mention all the environmental impacts the fashion industry has. It is also no surprise that it has a very negative impact on animals as their skins and furs are used in production. However, many are getting more aware of this and choosing to use vegan or faux materials to make sustainable and animal-friendly clothing. One of them is Alia Bhatt who has now been titled as PETA India’s 2021 person of the year.

Alia Bhatt has now become PETA India’s 2021 person of the year for all the hard work she has put into animal advocacy and activism. She has been known to lend her voice to the supports of cats and dogs and often advocates for stronger animal protection laws. She was also seen starring in a PETA campaign to promote animal adoption. In the video, she stated, “I am an animal lover myself, and my message to my fans would just be that if you love me, then please love animals even more.”

She invested in Phool, the company that came up with the concept of making vegan leather using used flowers from temples called Fleather. She also owns a vegan kids wear line called Ed-a-Mamma. Ed-a-Mamma also won the 2021 PETA India fashion award for promoting and nurturing the love for animals and nature within children. In 2019, Alia collaborated with Coexist, a platform focused on animal and environmental welfare and spoke about the effects of loud Diwali firecrackers on animals and birds.

“Alia Bhatt is not only helping to advance vegan fashion but also encouraging the next generation to be kind to animals,” said  Sachin Bangera, PETA India’s Director of Celebrity and Public Relations, according to reports. Additionally, he said, “Alia doesn’t hesitate to speak up, whether she’s rallying her fans to adopt a dog or cat or calling for action on crimes against animals.”

Alia Bhatt stands alongside Billie Eilish, who has also become PETA’s 2021 person of the year and is the youngest person to receive this title. People in the past that have been PETA India’s person of the year have been John Abraham, Anushka Sharma, Sunny Leone, R. Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Hema Malini, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Shashi Tharoor, Justice K.S. Panicker Radhakrishnan, Virat Kohli and Kapil Sharma for all the work they have done for animal welfare.

Firstly, congratulations to Alia Bhatt for this honour and most importantly, for such a noble cause. Writing and researching about this has inspired me to be more mindful of animal welfare and try to do my best to try and create a better world for them. I hope it did the same for you!
