Afghan Male News Anchors Stand In Solidarity With Female Colleagues By Covering Face On Air

With each passing day, the Taliban keeps finding ways to suffocate and control the women of Afghanistan. One of the most recent news that we heard was that female anchors and news presenters were now being asked to cover their faces when they are on air. However, one refreshing news from Afghanistan has come forth that male achors and news presenters have stood in solidarity with their female colleagues and also chosen to cover their faces while on air. This is the support we need!

There has been a protest against this very stifling and unfair rule on just female anchors. Their male counterparts have covered their faces with masks while on air as a form of protest. The protest has also taken momentum online with the #FreeHerFace trending. Male anchors from Tolo News have stood up for their female colleagues and worn face masks along with them.

Since gaining power last year, the Taliban have placed a number of restrictions on society, many of which are aimed at restricting women’s and girls’ rights in order to conform to the group’s conservative interpretation of Islam. Women were instructed to wear hijabs and face-covering veils that left just their eyes visible earlier this month by the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. Women anchors sought to reject the directive but were eventually forced to comply due to pressure from several television networks.

According to sources, Sahar Fetrat, who is an Afghan feminist is pleased with the men standing up for women. She said that this is a “great act” because all of the resistance and rallies against the veil have so far been led by women, this is one of the few situations where Afghan men are doing something symbolic.
