A Bone-Chilling Crime Of A Guy Cutting Off A Girl’s Head And Hands And Still Keeping Her Social Media Active Has Emerged. This Is Scary.

When I was little, my father would often soothe me to sleep after I had woken up crying from a nightmare, by telling me how there is absolutely nothing was going to happen to me and that I would always be safe. And in my dreams, I was. You see, as little kid, I, believed him and actually for many years after that. Till I realised that safety of women in this country is just an illusion and the real nightmare is what happens to us out on the streets. It’s gruesome and awful. As is what happened with the 19-year-old Ekta Jaswal. Her body was found decapitated in a field in Meerut.

A story that just with the headline has left most of us cold and shivering, in reality took place last year on 14th June, but it was only now that the case has finally been solved. Almost a year ago, the police had found a headless body, with her hands cut off and a case was filed in Meerut. She was not identified due to the missing head and the decomposition of the body.

Meanwhile, a family in Ludhiana whose daughter had run away with the intention of getting married to a guy named ‘Aman’, were under the impression that their daughter, Ekta, was happy wherever she was and even though she had cut all contact with them, they made peace with her being out there and doing her thing. Little did they know, that Ekta was the same woman whose body was recovered by the UP Police.

It all started a year a back, when a guy named Aman alias Saqib who worked as a ‘tantrik’ came in contact with Ekta after she reached out to him through a newspaper ad and she asked for consultations regarding her health and jobs. Aman first worked under someone, then went on to open his own ‘practise’ and was also said to be learning the art of ‘vashikaran’ aka hypnotism.

The SP of Meerut Police, Akhilesh N Singh said, “Both her (Ekta’s) hands were chopped off from wrists. The head was disposed off in a water body to conceal her identity. Something beginning with ‘A’ was tattooed on one arm, but it was not legible. Later we got to know that it was ‘Aman’ when we connected the dots.”

It was in March when the police realised that there were nearing 75 thousand phone numbers that were functional near the spot where the body was found,  making it almost impossible to trace the phones found on the girl to anyone. Akhilesh N Singh said, “Of them one was registered in Ludhiana and became non-functional later. The girl had two phones of which Saqib kept using one and deactivated the other. With that one number which became non-operational, we became suspicious that the case is related to Punjab.” It was after they recovered photos of her and Saqib that they tracked her family down in Ludhiana and paid them a visit.

Ekta’s maternal uncle said “Her phone kept working for one year and Saqib kept changing her photos on WhatsApp to mislead us. Whenever we would call, no one would pick up the phone. Initially after she left home in May last year, she would pick our call sometimes whenever she would have her phone or when no one was around. Her WhatsApp and Facebook photos and status messages were also updated. We thought at least she is alive…She also took jewellery from her paternal aunt’s place.” The same piece of jewellery that later became the reason for her death.

Reports revealed that once the photo of Saqib was shown around Meerut and he was caught hold of, they found out how he and his 5 other accomplices helped him sedate the young and naive Ekta with a drug in her soft drink and then killed her by chopping her head and her hands off, so the body would not be recognised. And all of this because she was pressurising him to marry her, a promise he made to her before he convinced her to run away with him.

And that is perhaps what the saddest part of this bone-chilling narrative is, that the lives of women are so expendable to be killed over something as small as 15 tolas gold or perhaps because of the pressure she put on a guy to deliver on his promise to marry her. Her family weeps at the kind of monstrosity the men showed their daughter even in death, and we cringe at the level humans are willing to stoop down to, for their own interest. Guess we’ve finally managed to make our reality worse than our nightmares.
