Bollywood Actresses Are Going The Extra Mile To Transform Into Their Characters. We Need To Support Them By Watching These Movies

It really takes more than just pretending to be someone else to nail a movie role. From dedicating time and effort to create authentic costumes and look, to putting in training and research, actresses today are really working to get into the skin of the character. In the recent Saand Ki Ankh trailer release, we couldn’t help but marvel at how unrecognisable Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar look. The prosthetic makeup paired with rural costumes to fit the bill, we are loving how contemporary actresses are not scared to go the extra mile!

The Fashion

Under the watchful eye of makeup director Dhananjay Prajapati, the actresses are all set to play the female athletes in multiple points in their lives. Taapsee herself has been sharing her Saand Ki Ankh, with shots from the film of her working on a ‘chakki’, sporting a fuller body with a padded suit underneath and salt and pepper wig to make her look authentic. It can’t be easy to be in your 30s and play someone in their 60s!

Taapsee and Bhumi spent months shooting in and basking in the real rural experience. Taapsee revealed in an interview as to how the makeup used to take them three hours every day. They also had to work on their dialects and body language, which they learnt by mirroring the women in the village that they were shooting in. “Since women in villages have different chores from women in cities, we had to notice how these women used to walk or carry out their work”, she said. The actress was also impressed by her co-star’s commitment, “When I used to see her prep, I would feel like such a useless actor. Plus, she knows how to use her surroundings, and the props around. Not many actors do it, but Bhumi is intelligent and does that,” she elaborated. Now that’s sisterhood!

The Form

It is not just the exterior that the actresses have to change for a movie role, sometimes it also comes from within. Katrina Kaif revealed that she gave up the gym for around a month to soften her toned frame for Bharat. She also took up yoga in order to fit into her role of a government worker in the movie, a character who is not supposed to have her famous washboard abs!

The Research

Jacqueline Fernandez became the new name to join the Netflix family with Mrs Serial Killer and her prep revealed how much these actresses commit. She said, “I chose to watch the films that would send chills down my spine, and also some that were thought-provoking. Particularly, like You, The Hunt For The BTK Killer, Mindhunter, Darr, Saath Khoon Maaf, Ahilya and Raman Raghav 2.0 made me understand the minutest details that would go into portraying a character of so many layers”, she elaborated.

The Courage

We are seeing a lot of actresses don the stripped-down look on screen. For her Netflix debut, Huma Qureshi sen an entire series in a red cotton saree and occasionally a tattered salwar kameez. She revealed, “I literally took 15 minutes to get ready. It was scary because there wasn’t any layer between me and the audience. But, in hindsight, I’m very grateful to Deepa for pushing me to make those choices and empowering me to give one of my best and most memorable performances.”, she said.

We are honestly loving the kind of work our leading ladies are putting out. Now, we as the audiences, need to support them by showing up and buying tickets.
