First-Ever South Asian New York Fashion Week Opens Doors For Emerging Designers Celebrating Desi Culture

This year’s New York Fashion Week is all set for its grand arrival, but with a twist. With a lineup of the world’s most famous and favourite designers, parading the runway with their latest collections, the fashionable week is hoping to explore the possibilities of inclusivity. Catering to diversity and a much larger chunk of South Asian residents in the foreign land, the fashion week opens doors to its first-ever South Asian edition. The initiative that aims at putting hidden South Asian artists under the spotlight, will commence on September 8 and conclude on September 14, 2022.

The exhibit curated by fashion entrepreneur Shipra Sharma in partnership with Hetal Patel, will recognise South Asian talent in this category. Brewing for close to a decade now, the coming together of this exciting lineup will celebrate the culture and craft that the community is known for. A roster of popular designers like Nomi Ansari, Mayyur Girotra, Aara by San, Bedi NYC, RKJ Designs, and Aariah by Sabbineni, will put their latest collection on display. The showcases will also find enthusiasts of South Asian fashion, influencers and celebrities, taking the top spot in the audience.

The fashion week is further categorised into compartments of menswear, bridal, festive wear, streetwear and sustainable fashion, amongst others. Besides the runway glam, pop-ups in the vicinity will cater to health and wellness. The marketplace will also turn as a bridge for consumers to meet these emerging designers and find a piece for themselves.
