Happy birthday to India's Bhaijaan!Salman Khan the actor, who made his debut in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi, soon became the bhai, to his fans. The star’s journey on the big screen has often been celebrated and loved. With unique characters in his filmography, the actor delivered some fashion inspiration that turned into cult-favourite, or at times cult-hated trends. From his blue stone bracelet to his Radhe hair, his fans never failed to follow every trend. And as the actor celebrates his 57th birthday today, we go back in time to trace every trend that his characters delivered through films.
Maine Pyaar Kiya
Playing his favourite onscreen name–Prem, the actor’s 1989 film–Maine Pyaar Kiya was a supreme hit. With delightful music, the film delivered some of the year’s biggest trends. Especially for lovers, everything from the friend cap to teddy bears, turned into the most special gifts to exchange. Besides that, Salman was seen sporting some embellished leather jackets, which btw were inspired by Tom Cruise’s look from Top Gun to his two-toned shirts, the actor played and looked the part well.

Andaz Apna Apna
In the classic Rajkumar Santoshi comedy film, Salman shared screenspace with Aamir Khan, Karisma Kapoor, and Raveena Tandon. In terms of style, prints and youthful colours entered his wardrobe through this film. From newsboy caps to printed shirts, and colourful pants, Salman and Aamir almost looked like a couple in coordinated clothing for the film.

Tere Naam
As soon as I hear Tere Naam, the first image that pops into my head, is the actor’s parted hairstyle, which went on to become Bollywood’s most bizarre fashion trend. A lovelorn, Kabir Singh of his time, the actor’s Radhe Mohan character was often seen displaying his angst towards the girl he had fallen for. For this role, Khan sported a tacky hair cut, with long, parted, glazed hair. His die-hard fans seemed to have loved the haircut and entered salons to get the Radhe look.

Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya
“I love you all” screamed Salman, in his famous track–“O Oh Jaane Jaana,” from the film, and ladies couldn’t help but simp. The actor’s rockstar andaaz, was styled using his six-pack abs, a raunchy guitar, and distressed denim. From dungarees to half jackets, Khan’s character Suraj Khanna was a hit amongst fans.
Karan Arjun
In the year 1995, Salman united with King Khan–Shah Rukh for Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun. Throughout the film, the actor’s character look gave a big nod to ganjis, leather jackets, and fitted shirts, which were often exchanged with clean white kurtas, and traditional chokers to provide a more desi look.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Entering the Bhansali universe, the actor was loved and adored for his looks, and his chemistry with co-star–Aishwarya Rai in the film–Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Seasoned with the Bhansali magic, Salman’s character Sameer wore the best of kurtas, tie-dyed shirts, bandhani, and turbans for special scenes in the film. With costume designs by Shabina Khan and Neeta Lulla, Khan was as well-dressed as his co-star Aishwarya in the film.

Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega
In the 2000 film–Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Salman Khan danced to the tunes of Anu Mallik’s still-popular track–“Ek Garam Chai Ki Pyali Ho.” Through the song, the actor invited another bizarre fashion trend by introducing the world to cropped ganjis, and fitted shorts, which I am sorry but we don’t want a man to ever sport. In some scenes of the film, the actor also wore mesh tops in black, and embellished dhotis, which painted a painful picture in the name of fashion.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!
Salman Khan again dressed a new version of his famous onscreen name–Prem with white shirts and suspenders. In almost every look, the actor’s two-pattern vests, and printed ties became a big wedding fashion trend for men to follow. With this, the actor also made suspenders look fashionable, by layering them on his oversized white shirts.

Hum Saath Saath Hai
Playing the shy Prem again, the actor entered an ensemble cast for Sooraj Barjatya’s family drama in the year 1999. With his role, the actor experimented with oversized clothing, including loose shirts, and blazer suits, with high-waist pants, and statement belts in place. Designed again by Shabina Khan, alongside Ashley Robello, and Mohsin Nathani, Salman weaved the ‘Prem charm’ in his closet with soft colours and clean tailoring.
