From Nutan’s Classic Black To Deepika’s Bright Gold, Tracing The Evolution Of Iconic Bikini In Bollywood

The conversation around Bollywood’s leading ladies in a bikini has either tackled the male gaze or revolutionised fashion in films. Much like a masaledar item song, Bollywood continued to put its heroines in a bikini set, with an aim to pull audiences to the theatre. But was it really just that? Ever since the year 1965, the industry’s beloved heroines decided to don a bikini for the big screen as a symbol of power and to deliver a message that your hemlines can never define you. According to the flag bearers of sanskaars, the bikini is still a controversial garment and the last piece that a woman should ever sport from her wardrobe.

But why do we forget the purpose clothes hold in our wardrobe? Season-specific, and location-appropriate, a swimsuit is nothing but a uniform for the sandy beach. With a seemingly revolutionised portrayal of swimwear in Hindi cinema, we sadly are still debating around a woman’s choice of skin show, through some impeccable bikini designs. And while it makes us question our society’s ancient thoughts, it also has me wondering about every time that the industry’s biggest names broke the stereotypes, and donned a swimsuit for the big screen. Hence, we are tracing back all the iconic swimwear looks in Bollywood. And of course, these are some of our favourites.
