Anamika Khanna’s AK-OK Inaugurated FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week With Mogra Hats, Twinkling Jholas And Shredded Denim

FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week has returned for another round of fashion, fittings and fun. With the homecoming of the prestigious fashion week in the scintillating city of Mumbai, last night was first-hand proof of the week ahead. Leading the five-day line-up, designer Anamika Khanna’s Pret label AK-OK inaugurated the ramp. Encircling the enchanting waterworks and glimmering fountain at the Jio World Convention Centre were models in a piece from the label. For Khanna, the presentation was an ode to her signature couture that arrived in much cooler moulds. Loaning accents from traditional shibori, tie-dye and bohemian ruffles was her brand-new collection that spoke in shades of ease.

The stark contrast was presented through a happy marriage between her genius in Couture and a newly imbibed energy of streetwear. Besides women walking the runway, men arrived in shredded pants, distressed denim and twinkling jholas. What further took the seated members by surprise was the unique gajras or mogra trails marinated with baseball caps. Replicating long and luscious locks were these well-weaved floral accents that swayed throughout the showcase.

New format silhouettes were born from Khanna’s love for busy, tropical prints, cut out in off-shouldered lace-led necklines. A missing symmetry in hemlines made it for us to easy to fall for the designs. Subtle statements were promoted through long-trailing trims that sparked a sense of shredded couture. It was as if she constructed the look to only break it down. Every element narrated a story and voiced the ideologies of the AK-OK essence.

Besides building a brand that has often crawled into the glimmering hangers of celebrities, Anamika expresses her vision for AK-OK, and says, “It is more younger, more ready-to-wear, the energy is different. Anamika Khanna label is more serious, more craft, it is more couture. Here, the vibe is more easy. We feel it is a lifestyle now. It is not about age anymore. Because I feel that even people who are like sixty or seventy are wearing these clothes and so are the ones who are seventeen. So, it is what you think about life, this energy, and not about how old you are or anything else.”

Khanna’s latest presentation, which also found a contributing hand from her sons, brought streetwear into a different light. Describing the marriage between mogras meeting caps, the homecoming of tailor-made shibori, spray-painted shirts, shredded denim and coiled-up shirts, Anamika describes the Indian rooted DNA of her Pret line as, “AK-OK comes from India, and it’s our roots. Even though it has spread its wings outside of here, I do not want to forget where I am from. So, for every collection and story, we first think what’s Indian about this, why are we doing this? That’s why every time whether it is the clothes or the fashion of it, I do consciously try to bring that Indian element.”
